MIFI could trigger mobile WAN overload

With trends like app stores, MiFi services and the growing popularity of data air cards and 3G dongles, there's going to be a whole lot of traffic on these networks pretty soon. MiFi services handily allow multiple devices connected locally by Wi-Fi to share a single mobile WAN Internet connection. That way, they don't all need an air card and monthly data plan. The shared mobile connection, though, is at least an order of magnitude slower than each Wi-Fi connection. So this approach could cause an occasional wireless packet pileup.
Also, as you know, app stores are the "in" thing. Most mobile handset makers now have one and Verizon Wireless has announced one, too. Another is coming from Qualcomm Internet Services with its Plaza Retail app store later this year to support not only the company's own BREW mobile operating system but several others as well. Enterprises and landline operators have long had sophisticated tools to help them see what traffic is on their networks, then prioritize packets and apply other policy-based actions to them. They have also had the luxury of adding more network capacity and processing power as needed.
However, wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and each mobile operator is limited to an even smaller amount, which they license. So it would seem that mobile network management in true 3G/4G networks, where all traffic, including voice, is IP-based, will become quite important.

Qatar to provide financial aid to Gaza through Hamas

Qatar decided to provide 10 million U.S. dollars to help Palestinian unemployed workers and fishermen in the Gaza Strip, deposed Hamas government, which controls Gaza, said on Saturday. Qatar's prince, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, informed deposed Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haneya of his decision during a phone conversation Friday night, said a statement by Haneya office. The cash support targets tens of thousands of unemployed workers who were affected by an Israeli siege on Gaza and the fishermen who could not work due to fishing restrictions imposed by the Israeli navy. The money would be paid through Hamas government. Israel imposed the blockade on the Gaza Strip when Hamas routed forces of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and ousted his Fatah movement in June 2007.
Qatar is one of the few Arab governments that deal directly with the internationally-isolated Hamas administration.
Earlier, Haneya called on Egypt to ease the process of aid delivery to the Gaza Strip, especially food shipments, to meet the people's needs in the fasting month of Ramadan. "The Palestinians have the right to celebrate Ramadan like all other nations through the help of the Egyptian authorities," Haneya said. On Friday, Egypt seized a warehouse full of food stuff that was waiting to be sent to the Gaza Strip via a network of underground smuggling tunnels.@

Israel wants to restart peace talks from beginning

Chief Palestinian negotiator currently said Israel wants to restart stalled peace talks with the Palestinians from the beginning instead of resuming them from the last point they left. "The Israeli government rejects to restart the final-status talks from the last point they stopped at," said Saeb Erekat, head of negotiation department of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). He also said the Israeli government, led by hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, rebuffs the U.S.-backed Road Map peace plan, especially the first phase of it which calls on both sides to take a series of steps paving the way for fruitful negotiations.
Meanwhile, Erekat said "The PLO seeks peace in accordance with the international legitimacy and law." The continuation of Jewish settlement in the West Bank -- in violation of the Road Map -- prevented the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations from making any progress. The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) insists that Israel should freeze all settlement activities on the occupied Palestinian lands and endorse the two-state solution.

WiMAX

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, also known as IEEE 802.16, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks". WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100 - 300 feet (30 - 100m). With WiMAX, WiFi-like data rates are easily supported, but the issue of interference is lessened. WiMAX operates on both licensed and non-licensed frequencies, providing a regulated environment and viable economic model for wireless carriers.WiMAX can be used for wireless networking in much the same way as the more common WiFi protocol. WiMAX is a second-generation protocol that allows for more efficient bandwidth use, interference avoidance, and is intended to allow higher data rates over longer distances. The IEEE 802.16 standard defines the technical features of the communications protocol. The WiMAX Forum offers a means of testing manufacturer's equipment for compatibility, as well as an industry group dedicated to fostering the development and commercialization of the technology.WiMax.com provides a focal point for consumers, service providers, manufacturers, analysts, and researchers who are interested in WiMAX technology, services, and products. Soon, WiMAX will be a very well recognized term to describe wireless Internet access throughout the world.

USM gets apex status

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has been granted apex status. With it, USM can expect hundreds of millions of ringgit in additional funding to transform it into Malaysia's first world-class university. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that quantitative and qualitative criteria were used to select USM under the accelerated programme for excellence (apex).Announcement time: Khaled flanked by deputies Dr Hou Kok Chung (right) and Datuk Idris Haron with a copy of the statement announcing USM as the country's first apex university. “The selection committee evaluated each university's state of readiness, transformation plan and preparedness for change.“After a thorough evaluation, the committee decided that only one university truly met all the criteria, namely USM,'' he told a press conference yesterday. The Cabinet had agreed to USM being given the apex status on Aug 27.
The university that is given apex status is one that has the greatest potential among Malaysian universities to be world-class, and as such, would be given additional assistance to compete with top-ranked global institutions, added Khaled.
He said with apex status, USM will be expected to move up the World University Rankings with a target of top 200 in five years' and top 100, if not top 50, by 2020.
In last year’s Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings, Universiti Malaya (UM) was the highest ranked Malaysian university at 246, followed by USM (307), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (309) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (364). A selection committee headed by former Universiti Malaysia Sarawak vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamad Zawawi Ismail short-listed USM, UM, UKM and UPM. USM's transformation plan, entitled “Transforming Higher Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow” focussed, among other things, on diagnostics, medical biotechnology, waste management, pharmaceuticals, nano-technology, membrane technology and vaccines. Asked why UM was not selected, Khaled said: “I hope the apex status will spur other universities to strive for excellence, too. It's not about selecting the oldest university but choosing one with a doable plan that can help us transform our higher education.”
The other universities that applied for apex status were International Islamic University Malaysia, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and Universiti Tenaga Nasional.

Project Done

Wireless Distribution System
When I was in my diploma level, i have done my final project which related with wireless. The name was Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Here a bit explanation regarding on it. WDS is one of the wireless LAN connection whereby it consists of more than 1 router. The wireless distribution system is often called a“wireless bridge” configuration, because it allows you to connect two LANs at the link layer. The access point (AP) behaves as a standard bridge that forwards traffic between WDS links (links that connect to other AP/wireless bridges) and an Ethernet port. As a standard bridge, the access point learns MAC addresses of up to 64 wireless and/or 128 total wired and wireless network devices, which are connected to their respective Ethernet ports to limit the amount of data to be forwarded. Only data destined for stations which are known to reside on the peer Ethernet link, multicast data or data with unknown destinations need to be forwarded to the peer AP via the WDS link.

Final Year Project

Bus AdHoc Services Via Wireless
The idea of the project was come from my supervisor, Mr Zakaria. He asked me to establish a kind of wireless connection that related with location based services. A bit explanation regarding Location Based Services is an information and entertainment service, accessible with mobile devices through the mobile network and utilizing the ability to make use of the geographical position of the mobile device.Campus Bus Adhoc Services via wireless is about on campus bus services schedule alert where subscribed/registered user/students can be notified the problem of bus scheduling. It is a way to monitor the turnaround time of the bus; how efficient or reasonable is the drivers as their route points. Basically, the ad hoc network concept is about the users are used to route communication traffic from senders to receivers. Each user has a node in these networks executes a routing algorithm that allows messages to be directed towards the next node along a route to the receiver. When talk about wireless, recently there are an extraordinary growth concerning the fields of the wireless communication that has been noticed. One of them is Location Based Services (LBS) where its opens a wide range of possible interesting applications, such as the public transportation service. Here, the campus bus adhoc services will close with LBS concept.
